Hi!
I'm trying to find a way (either through built-in logging, 3rd party app, or nifty little web trick) to record either the computername or username of visitors to my various websites. I haven't had any luck on google yet, and I have seen lots of people asking but not getting an answer, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this was possible?

Thanks,
Cerv

You can't record the username and computer name.

The computer name is only used by NETBIOS (WINS). This is not a routable protocol so is never seen outside the users local network or stand alone machine.

The username can only be collected if every visitor had their own username registered with your server and anonymous access was off, Therefore making each user authenticate.

If you are looking to implement return visitor tracking then a cookie based id tracking system will be needed.

Chris.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Cookies... a most excellent idea!

I'm off to learn how to make cookies and keep track of them. If anyone has any hints on it, please let me know!

Thanks Chris.
