Are there any advantages to detaching/attaching a database over backup/restore if I want to move the database to another server. If I detach, I'd probably want to do a backup anyway before... Just wondering if there were any functional differences between the two...

From a functional point, no they are basically the same.

The nice thing about a detach and attach is that there is no chance of someone getting in there and changing the data while the backup is running. However the backup may be smaller than the mdf and ldf.
