I am running Windows 98 2nd Edition, IE 6.0 on Microsoft network. All of the sudden, my internet stopped working. I am connected to a network with DSL. All the network settings are correct. I tried to ping outside of my network and I get " Destination host unreachable " but I can ping the servers and the routers fine. Please help! Janny

Is this just one workstation or all of them. If just one then it sounds like the permissions have been changed/corrupted. If all of them, then maybe RRAS is messed up. Do you have a proxy and or firewall?

It's just the one workstation. I extracted wsock32.dll file and it started working. Unfortunately, it also froze so had to reboot. It stopped working after that.

I don't want to reformat the hard drive and reinstall but I'm thinking that's my only choice? Janny

Before the ultimate sanction, have you tried repairing IE6? Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs double-click Internet Explorer etc and select repair. See if that does it. I know strictly speaking that shouldn't make any difference, but it's got to be worth a try since it installs upgrades to many system files!

Otherwise the tcp/ip may well be messed up, the only way I'm aware of to completely get rid of tcp/ip and reinstall requires DUN to be removed and reinstalled as well You might want to consider removing the protocol and rebinding it in Network Properties if the above article doesn't seem helpful.

Thanks for your response.

I tried repairing IE6 but no luck again.

I followed the article and still no luck.

Hi Janny and Paulwood,

I've similar problem and yet to find a solution. The problem is in one system in the network. Surprising when I ping the server from the problematic machine it returns the ip address of the machine itself !

Any help appreciated
