In Destination you can choose either default name or specified name for the file to be exported. In format you choose the file type.

Whenever I use default name, whatever format type I choose is saved to the destination file with the correct extension eg pdf, rpt etc and it opens OK with the correct application.

However, when I select Specified name the correct name is exported but without any extension, thus when it arrives in the destination file it is just identified as a file and I have to choose the correct application to open. If I select pdf as format then when I choose acrobat it opens OK. However, if I select rpt as the format it will not open with crystal, I just get an error message saying unable to find file!

Am I doing something wrong or am I just missing a Hotfix or service pack.

Hi,
To be sure, include the extension when specifying the file name, then try opening the various formats.

Tried that and it made no difference.

Lately found that if I keep the file name to less than 8 characters it works, ie I can open it with the correct application, but the file type extension is still not being exported.

In summary if I choose default name the file exports perfectly eg randomalpanumeric.pdf

If I enter a specified name and the extension type which is greater than 8 characters the file exported looks like

specifiednamepdf

with no extension and will not open with acrobat.

If I enter a specified name and the extension type which is less than or = 8 characters the file exported looks like

specpdf

still no extension but will open in acrobat.

You have to make sure you enter the . before the extension. Like this:
Specified filename: reportname.%EXT%

I oftentimes add the date as well like this:

Specified filename: reportname_%SI_STARTTIME%.%EXT%

This will allow the user to distinguish between different day's reports if they get the same one every day.

Thanks that works, still can't understand why CE will not automatically add extension when you select format type.

Ian

Ian,
It did add the extension because you showed the filename as specifiednamepdf and specpdf. The pdf is the extension and it was added by CE. It's just that you failed to put the period in there so it isn't recognized as an extension. Now it is. Do you understand?
