We have just signed up for a 30 day trial of Blackberry device to be tested in China - flight is tomorrow (1st July).
The engineers are not due on site until Monday 5th and insist that they need the handheld device on site in the UK when they install Blackberry Enterprise Server. We would like to take the handheld device to China to test and suggested that we could connect handheld to one of our WAN desktops out there.

Can anyone advise why the handheld device has to stay in the UK and why we cannot initialize through a VPN link to the network?

They most probably need to make sure that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server they are authenticating the test unit on is on a "tried and true" cell phone network environment they can better control during the installation should anything go awry.

The handheld itself could be configured remotely through VPN otherwise.

I don't see any technical reason why that must be done this way if the desktop - wherever it is - can access the Exchange server.

I have deployed units remotely in various locations across Canada on 2 different cell phone networks and never have had to be in the physical presence of the handheld to do so.
