Last week spy sheriff appeared on my pc and thank's to the help I received here I think I have finally removed it. But since the first appearance of spy sheriff, my desktop has displayed a blue background with a black box in the center, that says is strong red letters, "SYSTEM STOPPED" and then in white letters beneath, "System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected. It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer until all spyware removed."
Now I'm thinking that this is something that came with the spysheriff and not something that was built in to my pc's normal programing. But I can't get rid of it. I have gone to my pictures and tried to replace this image with another picture (right click then use this picture as desktop background)but it will not replace it. Then when I went to my computer/appearances, I'm not seeing my desktop image or theme options anywhere, I only see where I can change the resolution and the screensaver, and I'm sure it was there before?
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on and how I can get things back to normal?
Thank you in advance,
Contessa

I had that hideous thing plastered on my desktop yesterday. I was in a hurry and didn't have time to go through the entire geekstogo fix.

Here's a quicker fix that was the solution for me.

Went to control panel and removed Spyware Sheriff program.

I ran SpyBot & AdAware in safe & normal mode. Then, I logged in under another admin account, and manually searched for & removed the following files:

desktop.html
winstall.exe

Also remove the entire SPYWARE SHERIFF FOLDER

Restart and log in under original account. All should be well.

Good to know there's more than one way to chase that rascal out of Dodge! :)

pechenegs was 100% correct. My "quick fix" took care of everything, but didn't give me control of my desktop again, although the annoying background was gone. The reg fix is the final cure. Thanks! A star just for you :)
