A virus has made it impossible for me to do anything in winxp--no start menu, not even task manager. All I see is an old background that I used a while ago every time I start my computer up. I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this problem without deleting my hard drive. Thanks and I appreciate your time.

If you can boot into safe mode then you should be able to scan for viruses there.

A VIRUS? Can you be a little bit more specific?

I've tried safe mode, and I get the exact same thing. I'm not absolutely positive that it's a virus, but due to the fact that I can't do anything when windows starts up, I just assumed that it could only be a virus. The only way I can turn off my computer after I start up windows is by unplugging it, and I absolutely hate doing that, but I can't see any other way. My mouse works fine. but I can't click on anything (can't right-click as well).

The information you've provided doesn't point conclusively to a virus - my first thought would be "darn, what's gone wrong with windows?"

try a clean boot (to DOS) using a boot floppy, then scan your system for a virus.

if you're clean, try a fresh install of Windows, or try the Windows fora for the step-by-step troubleshooting tips.

Since you're using XP, try 'Last Known Good Configuration'. You will find this option by pressing F8 at bootup (like safe mode).
