Hi,

My desktop started behaving erratically recently. Even after I switch it on, it doesn't start up. The mouse, Keyboard and the monitor are not getting the signal. The HD, CD drive are getting the power. Some times it starts without any problem. Is it a loose contact or some other issue?

What do you mean by acting erratically, just that it wont boot fully into wondows?

Check the following.

When you turn on the pc check to see if the fan on the PSU in turning constantly as if it is not the pc wont boot and you need a new PSU.

Are you getting any audio or on screen error codes?

I'd also boot into safe mode a number of times and see if the desktop and windows start with no problems and work from there.

If you do want to have a look under the hood, check that the PSU connector to the MB is connected correctly and that the RAM and CPU are seated correctly.

Jump back with more info if you can and good luck,

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. The fans are working. There is no display coming, so I cannot even go for safe mode. The computer won't boot at all. When it boots, I hear a beep sound and there is no beep when it doesn't boot. As you suggested I will check the connectors and the RAM and CPU.

Thanks again.

Also, make sure that all cards are fully seated, all fans are running, check the CMOS battery for a 3 volt signal, and reset CMOS with a MB jumper.

If no luck, then install just the power supply, MB, CPU, RAM, video card, monitor, power-on button, and system speaker, place the MB on a piece of cardboard, and see if you get a display.
If you do, then install the drives and cards one at a time until the problem resurfaces. The last component installed is the cause.
If the problem comes back when the MB is re-installed in the case, then it's shorting out. The most likely cause is a metal standoff contacting a MB circuit trace. This can be resolved by installing paper washers(a manila folder makes great ones) between the MB and the standoffs.

If you do not get a display with the above setup, then either swap out the components with known working ones, or have them shop tested.

off hand I would say that your PSU is busted... but as you say, do check the connector, while at it check that the MEM, GFX card, and IDE connectors are seated correctly... Also check for too much Dust within the case, clear it if you need to, use either compressed air or a softbrisseld brush (art supplies with about 1" (2.5 cm) brissels)...

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies. The memory module was loose, I believe. I took it out and fixed it back after some cleaning and it worked.
