I have a weird problem whenever i start up my computer the destop icons are gone. They have just disappeared. I cannot do anything on the desktop, create shortcuts, drag etcs. but i can right click. I went to the desktop folder and everything is still there. I have tried runnung spyware programs but have come up with nothing and am currently running a virus scan. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

When you right click on the desktop and go to the "arrange icons by" options, is the show desktop icons option checked?

I dont want to insult ur intelligence, but you wouldn't happen to have active desktop running would you? That does the same things thatt you mention.

Try the "Show Desktop" shortcut. It worked for me today.

I use Powerpro (free and available from ) with XP Pro. One of the features is the ability to turn on and off the desktop icons. Earlier today I applied one of the fixes referenced in another thread to fix slow right-clicks in Explorer (specifically to to disable fading effect). Suddenly, when I elected to hide my icons, right clicking on the desktop stopped working. It is a item on the desktop context menu (which I set up in Powerpro) that I use to toggle the icons on and off, so I couldn't restore my icons. But before things got too shaken up, I clicked "Show Desktop" and the icons and context menu came back.
