This morning I came in and all the desktop icons are in a toolbar on the taskbar. How can I get them back to the "real" desktop?

Can't you just drag them out onto the desktop ???

FYI - all icons in the Quick Launch bar are located here: %userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

I think you misunderstand... ALL the desktop icons are now in a taskbar toolbar - not the Quick Launch toolbar. While I can open this toolbar and use the icons listed, I can't get them back to the "desktop" (as we know it). What you and I consider as the desktop is totally void of any icons or shortcuts. When trying to drag an icon to to the desktop (from the Desktop toolbar), the standard error dialog appears: The source and destination files are the same.

The "Show Desktop" icon on the Quick Launch toolbar only shows me the desktop toolbar - not the desktop. I'm thinking that there's a virus or malware running but so far all attempts to locate have proved fruitless.

Sorry - I should remember to reply AFTER I've had my caffeine hit in the mornings lol

I've seen this option on a Windows XP desktop but can't test it on Server 2003 at the moment as it won't show using Remote Desktop session

Try the following: Right click on the desktop and select Arrange By Icons, then Show Desktop Icons if it's unticked.

tootired...

The Arrange by icons menu list is greyed out and there is no option for Show Desktop Icons. I've checked the Registry and all the HideIcons and HideDesktop settings are as they should be. I've run several malware/spyware/a-v cleaners and have found nothing but I have a couple of heavy-duty cleaners yet to try. Keep those cards and letters coming!

OK - I got it fixed. After pulling out what little hair I had left, I removed an old version of Malware-Bytes and then downloaded a new version, saving the download file to the desktop (thinking it would be in the Desktop toolbar when I got the chance to install it). When I came back later to install it, the desktop was back to the way it should be! I deleted the desktop toolbar and the new "old" desktop has been in place for the last 2 1/2 days. Strange.....
