Desktop Icons all became the generic mini window
Please advise.

I have seen similar looking icons used to indicate they are pointing to a location which no longer exists. Have you changed drive letters or hidden any drives?

Did you try using System Restore go get back to before any trouble occurred?

Click on a blank area of your desktop and hit F5.
