Somehow or another I have highlighted all the text under my icons on the desktop. It's making me crazy because i can't figure out how to unhighlight it. Someone plz help me keep what little bit of sanity i have left. thank you, gracias, merci beaucoup :D
 
right click the desktop select properties > themes and check for the theme applied. Try using a standard theme and see if this clears this up.

System Restore can "roll the clock back" for you.

Play around with this setting.

Start/Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings/ Visual Effects/"Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop"

The only times I've seen that happen is when the setting for viewing folders is set to view as a web page. In an Explorer window, click on Tools -> Folder Options, then look to see how Click Items As Follows is set up toward the bottom of this window.
