desktop hardware/software inventory software

OK, it looks like the entire world of desktop hardware/software inventory reporting is a huge ripoff. Can anyone recommend a good app that makes a comprehensive report of the hardware and software on a desktop and then put that into a database?

Paying something like $5k is out of the question.

If 3k is reasonable, you should take a look at the Inventory module of SysTrack, from Lakeside Software. (

SysTrack tracks over 300 different hardware components, all software loaded on the machines, as well as any changes that have taken place. It also includes a reporting tool to allow for HTML sytle reporting. Check it out when you have a chance.
