I was recently installing and configuring a Proxy server program on a win2K Server. Everything appeared to be working normally. I wasn't changing Windows settings, services or anything else directly related to W2K. I did a server restart and after logging in my desktop wouldnt load (logging in as administrator). I had a mouse pointer and I could get to the task manager etc with ctrl-alt-del. I could even login as a different user. Upon inspecting the event viewer, I noticed a bunch of DNS errors. I opened the DNS snap-in and it wouldnt let me do anything with DNS. I tried to start and/or stop the DNS Client and Services and it would just 'hang'. I had to do a ctrl-alt-del to kill the task. I could still connect to the server and map drives. From the workstations, it appeared that everything was normal. I tried disabling several services in an attempt to pinpoint the cause, but it didn't help. Any ideas?

Brian

I would certainly start by unloading the Proxy Server program if you can and see if at that point it lets the Explorer run. You can also try, if installed, logging into a terminal server session. Typically it will let you do things that do not necessarily work when logging into the console. I would also check the compatibility of Win2K with you proxy software. Proxy software can typically makes some pretty heavy changes in the systems configuration (Sometime not as well, depends on the software). It just seems a little to convienent that you started having problems after you installed that software package.
