Just recently I've decided to put together a miniPC to be used as an old school rom gamer console. One thing I've never tried is mixing laptop and desktop components. I read earlier about using a 40-44 pin connector laptop cd drive to desktop mobo... but can it be reversed for a desktop cd drive to laptop mobo?

Get an external USB housing and use the parts to adapt the IDE to an internal USB port.

Signal levels should be OK, but the motor drive circuits and interface board current requirements are going to be a problem. Doesn't matter the other way because you can always get by with less current.
Then you are going to have a space problem.
