I always used a 15" monitor and designed for 600x800 resolution and that seemed to be just fine.. Now I have a 17" monitor and for some reason it seems that 600x800 on a 17" monitor is different (larger maybe?) than on a 15" monitor.. So I'm looking for some direction on how to design my sites. I prefer 600x800 as far as resolution is concerned, but how does the monitor affect things? Thanks in advance!

flasher - Statistics show that most users do indeed have their resolutions set at 800x600, so it's good that you design for that. As far as your monitor making it look bigger, that's just something ya have to get used to. When I went from a 15" to a 17" I felt like I had a big screen TV as a monitor. Having a larger monitor now such as you do, you get a feel of how the majority sees your site. Statistics also show that 17" and 19" monitors are most common. Again, you'll get used to the different look of the 800x600's look on your new monitor. Congratulations on the upgrade by the way! Happy designing!

Most users are at 800x600. I am at 1280, but I still design under 640x480.

I have had experiences building for the military and once received a support call from someone on a submarine who couldn't support more than 640x480 resolution on their antiquated government equipment.

That case is probably the extreme, but some users are stuck with the old stuff. So I still design 600 wide max. But that is just me.

I also work for a university now and we must design for 640 because we can't afford for people to have issues.

I think most designers I know are building for 800x600 though. Most of the difference you see in the monitor change is just in your head. Your eyes will adjust. Pixels are pixels. There are still only 800 there.
