I would differ in opinion here.
Even if the screen resolution is set to that mentioned above, if the user has the favorites window open, the remaining viewing window will be reduced to about 800 pixels in width, or perhaps even less.
Another scenario is where the user doesn't browse with a full screen window.
I would recommend a maximum image width of about 650 pixels, combined with a compressible or fluid design which would allow users still using 600 X 800 screen areas (and there are still plenty of those!) to view your work without having that dreaded horizontal scrollbar.

My guess is that the bigger the user's screen is, the less likely they are to run their applications full-screen. What's the point of having a big, high-resolution screen if you can only see one thing at once on it?
Yes, but you can also ensure the page displays reasonably well at 8oo X 600 by keeping maximum image widths within limits, and sizing tables, divs, spans etc in % rather than absolute sizes.
Best of both worlds that way, with the added benefit that the page will fill a larger window properly as well.
