When designing a website for 1024x768 browser, what pixel size should i start out with in Photoshop?

I have seen 990x 560 on the web and also 999x618, but not sure which one would be best or if there is a better size?

Thanks

That is completely up to you. Play around with a few images of different sizes to see which size works best for your eyes at that browser size.

955x600 is pretty good.

Wow JT that almost looked like you knew what you were doing!

I would differ in opinion here.
Even if the screen resolution is set to that mentioned above, if the user has the favorites window open, the remaining viewing window will be reduced to about 800 pixels in width, or perhaps even less.

Another scenario is where the user doesn't browse with a full screen window.

I would recommend a maximum image width of about 650 pixels, combined with a compressible or fluid design which would allow users still using 600 X 800 screen areas (and there are still plenty of those!) to view your work without having that dreaded horizontal scrollbar.

Regards, Andy.

My guess is that the bigger the user's screen is, the less likely they are to run their applications full-screen. What's the point of having a big, high-resolution screen if you can only see one thing at once on it?

If you want to design a website to use 1024 screen resolution I have one bit of advice for you - DON'T DO IT!

Thanks.

I would rather not design with 1024 but that is what they want me to do. And i don't have the clout to change it.

Yes, but you can also ensure the page displays reasonably well at 8oo X 600 by keeping maximum image widths within limits, and sizing tables, divs, spans etc in % rather than absolute sizes.
Best of both worlds that way, with the added benefit that the page will fill a larger window properly as well. :)

Regards, Andy.
