We are currently on the process of puting a 81c in a new 6 floor building and I need some ideas on how to design a good number plan for internal extension.
-The extension numbering plan that I get to work with is:
4100 to 5099.
-Each floor has a different dept working together.

Break dedicated ranges for departments, ie: 4100 - 4199 for x department.
Program rollovers as 5 digits at least, this way rollovers do not suck up much needed DID's.
Program acd pos id's as 5 digits, same reason as above.

thats for your reply pbxn, I was thinking about that solution. If I brake it up, how would I be able to indentify what floor they are in?

Would it be a good idea to use 5 digit extension? ie: 14100-14199 for x dept, 1 representing the floor they are in? how would this effect the did range or 4100-5099

You might like to reserve what a former boss of mine called, "golden numbers" -- for hunt group pilots, special access extensions, and... well, ummmm... senior staff who appreciate little favors and remember them when say, capital budgets are submitted <nudge-nudge, wink-wink>.

Here is an example of what I do.
If a phone needs to have a DID, and a rollover,
program 4100 as their primary extension/DID, then the rollover to (let's say your 3xxxx range is wide open) 34100.
As far as floorplan, draw it all out on paper, or a spreadsheet first. Get a list of all employee's, preferrably by department and start from there. Let's say you have a Loan department on floor 2. Allocate x number of DID and rollovers for that group, and in the phone programming in the des put Loan2, or something like that.
Plan it all out first so there is no surprises later.
Nothing worse than planning, thinking you have it all set, just to find out you have to start all over again.
Hope that helps

you may get more feedback in the merridian forum. but the number plan depends on the did range. not much to consider unless you have networked switches. just make sure you don't burn all your did's by giving each phone more then one. either look at mcr keys, or 5 digits for the non did roll over numbers.. you can start with a listed dept number, with x number of did's for each dept, but it will not stay in place. when people transfer between depts, they usually like to keep the same numbers. just make sure you don't put complete depts on one card.
