Hello
I've been asked to design a 12 page A4 brochure.
The trouble is, how do I layout the pages?
Should it be
1 - 12
2 - 11
3 - 10
This shouldn't be a problem, except I need to insert some plans that run over 2 pages (eg. 8 and 9), which of course wouldn't be on the same piece of paper.
Does Quark cater for this? Or should I just design
1-2
3-4 and leave the rest up to the printers?
Big thanks

I would set up as 1..12 with no special treatment

Set up document as facing pages...
Let printers take care of the rest

1 / cover - as a right page
2..11 - inside matter
12 / back page - as a left page

Kind regards
Duncan

If you're talking about printer spreads i.e. print three a3 pages 2-sided and staple in the middle, arrange the pages this way:

Back cover - front cover
pg 2 - pg 11

pg 10 - pg 3
pg 4 - pg 9

pg 8 - pg 5
pg 6 - pg 7

A prepress service will ALWAYS take care of this for you when you go to press.

Please always set up your Quark file in readers spreads NOT
printers spreads. The reason is when you send it to your printing firm 98% of the work comes in readers spreads 1-12.
This way there is no chance of getting the pages wrong, we do this day in and day out, The problem is when designers try to make things easier it can be costly in the long run.

The longest jounney starts with the first step.

Thank you for your advice.
How do I set up a file in readers spreads? I can't find it anywhere.

Actually, I think by readers spread you mean set up like 1-12 as opposed to facing pages that go like this:
2-11
3-10
4-9
Am I right?

No.

Don't try and do anything clever.

Just create a document 12 pages long as spreads.

[white]x[/white]x [red]cover (right-hand page)[/red]
xx 2/3
xx 4/5
xx 6/7
xx 8/9
xx 10/11
x[white]x[/white] [red]back page (left-hand page)[/red]

THANK YOU, your help has been really appreciated.

The whole subject of preparing files for print seems to be coming up a lot, so I've put together a basic FAQ on the subject. Comments/requests/praise/critisisms are all equally welcome!
