Hi Can anyone point me to a Architecture document were it states best practice for core/Aggregation Layer 1gb and access layer.
What are the implications of have your core/Aggregation at 1Gb and the access layer at 10 Gb. I would expect link saturation but is there an actual design standard on it

thanks in advance

Hi,

If the majority of the traffic will be contained within the 10GB switch, with only a small percentage of traffic going to the slower core/distribution layers then that is a valid design. If this is the case, you should look at QOS to shape or police your traffic as needed.

You should have your core be the fastest/most powerful device while the distribution/access is slower as a network connection is only as fast as its slowest link! If the core is the choke point, and if most of your traffic will flow through the core, your whole network will be the speed of your core.
