Design or Purchase

I've been asked to design an Intranet for a company. Some of the things they are looking for are a few customizable applications like news, weather and stock quotes.

My question is this: Should we look into designing our own Intranet Portal or is there a package out there that would do what we're wanting.

In addition to the above they also would like ecommerce as well.

Any suggestions?

I looked into this for a company I used to work for, and it costs money to buy rights to the news, stock and weather streams. There are a lot of companies out there that provide portals and they will brand them for you. It all depends on your level of expertise in designing the backbone of such a site, the amout they are willing to pay, and the amount of resources and people on staff to program and maintain such a site.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

They don't have a problem purchasing rights if it does what they want. Moreso managability really. If we customize the job only a select few obviously. But is there a package out there that does it?

Intranets.com is one... I don't rememeber if they have news and stock quotes... but they have all sorts of features like email, file sharing and stroage, a forum and message board, calendar, etc...

if you do a search for personal web portal or web portal on google I am sure you will find a lot, I knwo we looked at about 8 different products.
