I need some guidance about cube design, we have requirement of building cube from EPM data warehouse for financial information like GL, P&L, Balance sheet, Strategy. I know how to build cubes from PowerPlay but I’m not sure what should be dimensions and measures.

In my initial design I’m planning to take following as dimensions but not sure about measures,

Business Unit(companies), P&L Account (with hierarchy Class, category), Balance sheet Account (with hierarchy class, category), Strategy (Division, rollup), Trading account, Timeline (Year, Month, Qtr, week)

Can anyone please guide me in this what should be my measures in such type of financial cubes. What is best practice? Should I build one single cube or multiple cubes.

Any ideas, links or design documents will help me to start with. Thanks in advance

I guess the types of measures you would use would depend on what data is stored in your system, but some measures that we would include in financial cubes would be:
- Actual ($)
- Budget ($)
- Variance ($) ie. the diff between actual and budget
- Variance %
- maybe a Transaction count?

If all of the information is relevant for all measures then 1 cube should do you just fine. I'd recommend a separate cube if you are starting to add several more dimensions, purely to avoid overloading the users with information.

Cheers
