What's the word that's used when a brand name is used to represent an object. Like people talk about a "hoover" instead of "vacuum cleaner" or "jif" instead of "white cream cleaner

It is called a commonnization. There have been threads in this forum as well as Making An Impression (Forum1256) about them.

Good Luck

thanks, that's only been bothering me for years

BTW,

In the US, Jif is a brand of peanut butter. Only the "crunchy" style is effective as a cleaner...
