Deprecated <s> tag question

We have a horde of legal-type HTML documents that must use the <s> (strike-out or strike-through), tag to display verbage that has been deleted/removed from the document.

I'm attempting to convert our site to be XHTML compatible (moving toward XML), but everything I've read with regards to XHTML (and XML) tells me that the <s> tag is "deprecated".

My question is, what do I use in place of it?

I've scoured several CSS books and documents, but can't find anyway to get "strike through" text on an XHTML compliant document via styles.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also curious if anyone has suggestions for the and tags, which from what I read are deprecated as well.

It appears <s> is one of the casualties in the crusade against physical style tags, the idea being that tags should indicate the content of the text rather than the way it is rendered. You are supposed to say "this bit of the document is deleted" rather than "this bit of the document has a line through the middle of it" (even if the latter is actually what you want for legal reasons).

Apparently there's a <del> tag to indicate deletions, which browsers will probably render in the same way as <s> (you could reinforce this behavior by explicitly requesting it in a style sheet). -- Chris Hunt
