what is the best way to deploy stand alone desktop java applications for both windows, mac users?

also, do i need to package jvm or java-runtime with it or do most operating systems come bundeled with them?

Most OS come without an a jour JVM.

If you deploy with on a cd, a recent jvm would be fine.
If deploying via the web, let the user choose - perhaps you may give him a link to the sun-download-page.
The JVM is too big to install it on guess. And soon some users might already have a more recent JVM, than yours.

Your application can be bundled as a jar-file, with a starting-script for windows (.bat). I don't know for macs. For Linux a .sh-starting script.

A webstart-application is an alternative way to go. It adresses more unexperienced endusers. I don't know details, but you will find more infos on the sun-site.
