Deploy or not to deploy a printer?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to school myself on how to PROPERLY add a printer to an SBS 2008 domain. We already have 5 printers but I only see two printers deployed in the Print Management area. Can someone please explain why someone would or wouldn't want to deploy a printer?

I thought I could add the printer and drivers to the SBS 2008 domain controller (next to all the other printers). Then find the printer with the client PCs on the domain. Do I still have to install the drivers on all the clients, too?

Why can I find the printer when typing in \\172.19.0.200\Konica 1690 but I can't find the printer when I use \\SERVER-01\Konica 1690

I think I must be doing more than one thing wrong....

When you install the printer there is the option for you to install additional drivers for clients, this needs to be done as when it connects it will pull the driver from the server.

Secondly, this sounds like a WINS issue

Can you ping the server via server-01 ? does it resolve
if you try and UNC to \\server-01 do you see a list of shares/printers

If not

What happens if you UNC to \\server-01.fqdn.local ?
