Looking at an XP machine for example.

2 settings:

DEP(data execution prevention) located under My Computer-Properties-Advanced-Performance-Settings. 2 choices - on or off.

Under Internet options-Advanced, in Security section there is Enable meory protection to help mitigate online attacks.

What is the differnece between the 2, if there is a difference.
