Deny access to external websites

We would like to have our workstations use internal websites as well as get MS updates and a few other external web sites. What is the best way to approach this

We are a small company and I have many roles. Included network administrator but i have no experience with a proxy server.

Do you need to get to external websites on these pcs at all? If so you could look at editing host files on the pc or blocking traffic (except allowed addresses) at your firewall.
