demote AD from safe mode

I have a setup with one server only this was configured with AD on it.
Unfortuantly AD has corrupted and I do not have a system state backup. I can boot in to directory services restore mode but can't run dcpromo to demote the server in safe mode.
Or can I do a restore of a blank new system state somehow?

So basically I want to get the machine demoted in safe mode - any ideas?
