Hi:

Has anyone installed or used Delphi 5, in particular, but also Delphi 6, 7, or 8 on machines running under Windows Vista?

My computer died this summer, and I replaced it with a notebook which came with Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it.

I'm reluctant to go through the process of reinstalling Delphi 5 and all the 3rd-party components I bought for that version (which is why I am not currently using a later version of Delphi) if they won't work.

Please advise!

You have to turn off UAC, and logon as an administrator, to get Delphi installed. After turning UAC back on, either Delphi should run fine, or it should be 'Compatibilised' to 'Run as admin' from the shortcut settings. If that doesn't cut it, you just have to keep UAC off... The Administrator thing is a requirement for D5, AFAIK.

I encountered some problems installing Delphi 7 last August on a Vista Business laptop. Check my posting from August 24th to see if the help sites I indicated might help you get going.

You may get a message advising you of compatibility issues ,or whatever, but just hit the "Run Program" button.

I hope some of this helps.

How do programs written in Delphi 5 run on Vista machines ?
If its a compromise on installing like it seems from the above posts, I fear that D5 might be incapable or perhaps erroneous ?

delphi 5 progs run just fine under vista. you just need to pay more attention about using API's that may clash with UAC. this is the same thing for all delphi versions (even V2007)

I ran Delphi 3 on a Vista release candidate for a short time, and didn't have any problems, other than the UAC stuff. The only big change for Vista that will impact you is if you have a lot of command-line things, because I couldn't do that when I was using it. But if you stick to forms-based things, you should be fine.
