At the moment, I have to pc's...one Dell laptop and one dell desktop...that are hooked up to a Dell wireless router. They're both hard-wired at the moment, but the router is wireless so I figured this might be the spot to post my question.
I should add that I DO NOT HAVE THE WIRELESS ROUTER'S INSTALLATION SOFTWARE. I cannot get to the router configuration page until I can get a hold of it from Dell. I know this might not be a major issue, but it is worth mentioning since I haven't used a Dell router before. Also, there is no internet connection for this network yet.
I have them both networked correctly, but I can't hold a connection very long at all. DHCP addresses didn't work at all so I assigned them both static IP's.
I was trying to connect to a network printer, but while it's status was "connecting" the network connection itself dropped and only let's me get back in every few minutes (that's how I know they're set up ok).
I've noticed that when I ping from one machine to the other, the first reply is fine. the second times out...then the third is fine and the fourth times out.
I'm not doing anything fancy...just trying to share a printer. I've networked tons of computers before, wireless and hard-wired, and haven't had a problem like this.
Before we get into specifics, what can I do to make this network connection hold? or find out why it's been dropping? I'm A+ certified so I know enough about networking basics to get started, but I'm sure there's something beyond A+ that you all might know.
Everything is named, workgrouped, and shared as it should be. The networking hardware is barely used because there was never a network present with these two machines before.
