I'm working on a new Dell Server running Win2K with a solomon database. I don't have a lot of info about the server other than it has a gig of memory and an Intel 10/100 controller. This machine locks up once a week or so at random. There is no pattern to the lockups, the only way to recover is to hit the reset switch; nothing is in the event log to provide a clue. The machine serves about a dozen or so clients through a switched network. I've monitored the network with a sniffer, the only thing that shows up abnormal are slow database responses and long acks, but I've yet to be able to capture anything at the time of the lockup. Any ideas?

Hardware!

Try and run extensive hardware tests, Its a fair guess that something is wrong with either the board or the memory.

Try stripping the hardware down and re-seating everything, you'll be surprised (I hope!).

this problem turned out to be a DOS attack against PPTP ports.
