I have a Dell Inspiron laptop model 1764 and wish to restore it to original factory conditions. However, when I start the recovery after answering the question, "Yes, format the drive....", the system throws the error, "Parameter is not correct".

Is there anyway to fix this error? The image partition itself looks clean. I also ran Gibson disk checker and no errors were found.

Exactly what "command" are you typing to FORMAT the drive/partition?

Just like I said. I am trying to restore my computer to original factory conditions using the recovery partition on the hard drive. The process automatically reformats the drive before copying the image to the C: drive.

So, two possibilities - bad hard drive (corrupting the recovery area) or corrupted recovery partition (for some other reason).

I would test the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic utility (may be one in the F12 menu) or via bootable CD.

If that shows hard drive is good, you may have to contact Dell to see if they will help OR you are on your own in terms of getting an install media and installing from scratch.

If XP, you must find your own media source.

Before attempting the factory reset/system restore, from a command prompt, try chkdsk /f to fix errors or chkdsk /r to recover bad sectors. May take some time to run to completion, but often removes incorrect parameter errors. If done from a command console within windows, the system will reboot to carry out the command.

This should be Windows 7, so Shift+F10 in the Windows Recovery Environment and then chkdsk c: /f should work

also, if bios changes were made you might get that, had one where someone changed setting to (for SATA controller)ACHI, and then the laptop stopped booting with an error and the recovery partition was inaccessible, changed back to default and booted ok after.
