I recently acquired a used poweredge 1850. All seems to be working on the system, but the unit does not appear to be equipped with a RAID controller. It is about 4-5 years old and has one 10K ultra320 drive in it. I am thinking about getting a couple of new 15K drives and would like to put in a raid controller before putting the server into active duty.

I looked on Dell's site and used the service tag to get ideas as far as upgrades. Their site showed a raid controller, but it was only an ultra 160 and if the system supports 320 that would be preferential. I would likely use the raid for redundancy not speed (i.e. use a raid 1). I also noticed that the controller dell listed was between $400 and $500 which I thought was a little, especially for my needs and budget.

I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for a raid controller that will work with this server and any recommendations for drives. The server will be used to host the website and email for a small in-home start up business as well as some other network functions for the LAN.
