Has anyone tried using non-Dell approved hard drives in a server or enclosure connected with a Dell PERC 6 RAID controller?

I'm considering buying a PowerVault MD1000 and I don't want to buy the hard drives from Dell, but the documentation for the PERC 6 RAID controller said that it only supports Dell qualified drives.

I'm curious to know if anyone has any experience in this area.

Have not needed to replace a drive hanging off a Perc 6 yet....
Been using Perc adapters or LSIlogic(same) for years, and have replaced many Dell OEM disks with retail drives. Basically I always order retail drives after the warranty, no issues, approx 100 drives for arrays over the last 18 years. Now there always is the possibility a retail drive's firmware could have an issue with an OEM's firmware. If you order retail, never purchase OEM/recert/refurb drives for an array. If the warranty is less then a 5 years factory warranty, verified at the manufacturers site, then the drive is one of the above.

In these situations, I generally buy the server/device with one of the drives that I want, I then get the same make and model. I've done this 3 or 4 times and not had a problem. I've also tested the RAID by pulling disks out and rebuilding the array (prior to going into production obviously!).
