I have a Dell Dimension 2400 System unit running Windows 98 but I am using an unbranded monitor. How do I get my VGA working properly to 800x600 pixels and higher

The monitor usually has nothing to do with it. You can make sure you have "Default" or "Plug & Play" monitor selected, but it likely won't have any impact on your resolution settings.

Instead, you need to install the right driver for your video card (or motherboard integrated video). Right now, Windows is using a generic one for the adapter.

You can probably find one out on Dell's website, or search the net...

Assuming that the monitor is capable, you resolve the problem by replacing the generic 640 by 480 default loaded by 98 on install.
On your machine you have a service tag #. If you can't find it get into the CMOS and get it there. Go to the Dell site and key in the service tag # , go to download drivers and it will tell you what is available. Download the drivers that apply to your machine. Put them somewhere on the hard drive where you can find them. Go to the place you stored them and expand them, then either let them install or do it later.
Video generally in an instant install after unzip.

Your one possible problem will be in identifying the correct driver to download. You may have to make a choice between the possible cards or integrated, since Dell may have offered multiple choices at purchase.
