Hi all,

I have a Dell Inspiron with a very strange dial up issue. The built in PCTel Modem appears to dial fine and states that there is a connection to the remote computer. The connection then fails with a failed to connect.

If I then reinstall the modem driver it connects fine with no problem at all. Then after a reboot it reverts to exactly the same problem as before. The only way to get it working again is to reinstall the driver.

This is not much of a problem as I only use the dial up in emergency's, but I would like to get to the root of the problem.

Cheers in advance.

Rob.

Have you tried the Winsock fix mentioned in this FAQ?

WinXP Connectivity Issues
faq779-4625

Have you tried disabling any other Internet Connections such as any Broadband before using Dial-Up?

Error Message "Error 633" When Starting Broadband Connection

Are you getting an Error Number concerning the Modem?

Have you typed "Modem" in the Help and Support program's search box (you do have some Internet?) and looked at the advice there? Have you looked at Phone and Modems Options in the Control Panel?

Check for any updated Modem drivers from the Manufacturer or try here.
Drivers downloaded via Windows Updates are notorious for being the wrong drivers required.

Does the Modem work via "Safe Mode With Networking"?
