strange problem, sometimes when I reboot my dell 700m laptop I have a blank screen, nothing brings the video back until I plug a cable into the external monitor port and hook it up to an external monitor, then the laptop monitor starts working fine again, for a couple weeks, and it happens over again. I can reboot several times with no issues, then it crops up again. Really frustrating when on the road with no external monitor around to fix it. Any thoughts on the cause?

did you try toggling between internal/external screen (fn+f8 on my dell)?
next time remove ac and batterie, press and hold power-button for 30sec, get power back and boot, that might help

I did try to toggle using fn+F8, tried every trick I could think of, removed battery, held power button to shut down. Rebooted. Nothing worked until I plugged in the monitor cable to the external monitor port while it was plugged into an external monitor.
Then the laptop monitor start to works normally again.

So hold power button for 30 seconds after battery and power cord are removed, what does that do?
