When someone sends email to one of my users from the outside world the sender gets a bounce back message from my server saying
"Subject: DELIVERY FAILURE: Error delivering to cesar; Cannot store document; database has too many unique field names. Please ask your administrator to compact the database."

But when I send an internal email to this user he gets it just fine. Not sure what to do here. any suggestions would be appreciated. I inherited this Domino server so I am a Novice here.

The database needs to be compacted. Consult you Domino Administrator Help db to find out how to do that.

You say you "just inherited" the server : are you going to get any training ? One word of advice : you'd better convince your management that you need it. One does not administer a Domino server by intuition, or off-the-cuff decisions. I don't think any server should be attended to by someone who is not a professional in that area.

This remark is not intended to belittle you in any way. It's just that I've been a Notes developer for over a decade now, and I have no intention whatsoever of managing a Domino server. It's not simple, and the more users and the bigger the environment you have, the more complicated it gets.

Get some training sessions, and find some good books to read up on. The help will be immeasurable.

i appreciate your reply, I couldn't find an answer quick enough, so I compacted the database the other day and it fixed the problem. I inheeited this becasue the person who administered the domino server quit. Fortunatly for me the company has decided to toss out Domino/Lotus and go with a Microsoft email solution which is where my experience is. So until we rollout with a new email server I fly by the seat of my pants and if we have any problems that cannot be fixed by me, we'll have to shell out the big bucks for an outside party to fix it.
