Delivery failure, SMTP

We often experience problems getting emails through to other sites, however when we bounce the server they go through. Has anyone got any ideas, I am inclined to think that it is something to do with DNS. What should I look at?

We had a similar situation with our Notes server being behind a proxy server. SMTP would work for a while then quit. I think we had to create a small ini file on the notes server and specified certain timeout fields and ports. What is your configuration? Does your server go through any type of firewall?

Yes we are behind a firewall, we have three mail servers with one smtp server. No proxy configured as we dont have one. Will be looking into the time-out fields and ports.
