Having recently experienced a problem with a virus that was taking over my bandwidth and removing my desktop (solved thanks to good advice from members of this forum) I have now noticed that there is a suspicious icon (looks like a cartoon head in black and white) on the right of the task bar in among the programmes that launch on start up. My question is : How can I stop programmes launching on start up? To add to my concerns just as these programmes are launching I see a minimised window appear at the bottom of the desktop with just the top showing and just for a second or so entitled 'mirc'. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Your problem sounds like you should do a fresh install of windoze (or better yet..linux).

To remove programs from the startup...there is a folder in you start menu...called startup....delete anything in there.

Your bandwidth problems may have something to do with spyware on your computer as well.....do a search on google for spybot....this program shoiws you all the spyware on your box....just be carefull as to what you delete.

or instead of putting more bloat on your machine....you can modify the files manually.

Wooluf - many thanks for the advice - I downloaded the Startup Manager programme from the link you kindly provided. I highly commend it to anyone wanting to monitor/disable/ enable programmes which are launched automatically by windows during startup. Unfortunately whilst I was then quickly able to see the trojan lurking there ( 'huigezi' ), when I disabled it with the Startup Manager and then re-booted I ended up right where I had started - with no desktop. Re-booting into DOS I found that explorer.exe was back in the system32 directory. Deleting it was the solution before but alas the bad boys are clearly now a step ahead and I am off to buy NAV/ Firewall.
