deleting part of my image 1

I have a square image that i want to make into a shield shape (cutting the bottom left and right into a arc), however i have no idea how to do this in illustrator, i could do it in photoshop but quickly realised it nothing like the same.
how would i do this?

...you need a clipping path shape, so draw the shape of the shield you need, position above the vector image you have and line it up...

...a clipping path has to be above the target you are clipping...

...then select both the shield shape and the pattern you have and choose "object > clipping mask > make"...
