Hi all. Question, please. How do I make a new Compaq PC NOT use the "F" drive for a Removable Disk drive? I need the F drive mapped to a network drive. I can't "disable" it in Device Manager. Thanks in advance!

The general case:

But removable drives pose an issue, particularly with legacy Netware systems where Drive F needs to be mapped.

The "solution" is to change the drive letters for other drives (not floppies, and not hard disks) to higher drive letters so as to free low letter slots. If you have a CD-Rom drive, use Disk Manager to move it to drive letter R, for example. Anything that does not conflict with your planned mapped drive letters.

By freeing low level drive letters below F, the removable drive will take the first free slot and not use F.

You can change the drive letter in Disk Management. I have done this with no problems before for various removable hard drives that I use for data storage.

To get to Disk Management you can right click on My Computer and select Manage. Under storage you will see Disk Management. Once you click on that you will see your hard drives.

The problem is that he would have to manually make the change in Disk Management every time; and he needs to make the change prior to making the network logon -- which he cannot do easily.
