All,
I am trying to delete a .dll file from my system, but it keeps giving me the error that it is tied to the system and can't be deleted or something of that sort.

I tried going into Safe Mode / Command Prompt to try to delete the file, but I still can't delete it doing that either.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this one?

Please help if you can.

Thanks in advance!!!

NOTE: When deleting a file from the System32 folder, check first to see if it is in the System32\dllcache folder. If it is, then delete it from there first — otherwise, Windows will restore the file from dllcache when you delete it from System32. Confirm (when asked) that you do not want Windows to restore it!

It is a virus file that I am trying to delete (DOSFXE.DLL)

I have tried that tool you are suggesting linney. Either I don't know what I'm doing or the tool is not working.

Please help.

Thanks,

That tool is only for replacing one genuine Microsoft file. obtained from the XP CD, and then inserting it into a location on your hard drive, usually the System32 folder, to replace the corrupt version.
It is not relevant to your particular problem now that you have told us what file you want to get rid off.

Try the tools that Bill has mentioned, they might work, or try some tools that delete files before Windows is fully loaded, during the bootup sequence.

DelLater.

Of course if it is part of a nasty virus etc. it could replicate itself at every boot from some registry setting.

Try a thorough clean out of your machine, perhaps even running some of the scans from Safe Mode.
