deleting characters from imported data

Can you tell me how to delete data from this string. I imported this data and want to delete everything to the right and including the "-" in my query?

K457243-3 NOW

I need to extract K457243 only
 
Sort by date Sort by votes
Left(fieldname, instr(fieldname,"-")-1
Check the instr function in help
