Is there a way to delete the contents of the backup device with out deleting the device. ?

Thank you

I'm not quite sure I understand you.

You created a "dump device" and did a backup using the dumpdevice? Now you want to delete the backup and not the 'dumpdevice'?

Just delete the backup file. The dumpdevice can still be used to backup the database.

If that's not what you meant, please explain it a bit better.

you mean delete the .bak file. . and if i do this the device will still be there?

thanks

Yes, I do that a lot. The dump device (created by sp_addumpdevice) is just a command, it's not a real device. All it does is tell SQL Server where to save the backup file to.

You can delete, or rename, or move the backup files (.bak in your case) without changing or deleting the dump device.

thank you very much for the info, that makes more sense. i would imagine that i can use this .bak to restore it to a different box.

Yes, you can restore the backup file (.bak) to another SQL Server.

However, the SQL Server needs to be the same 'level' as the original one. Same version, same patches, same service pack, same collation.
