Is there a setting within an Oracle agent (say arcserve) to delete archive log files once they have been updates more then once, or is it a case of manually deleting the files once you know they are on tape?

if you are using rman, you could add the following line to your script:

change archivelog until time 'SYSDATE-2' delete;

this would remove all archlogs until older than 2 days, for example.

Otherwise I'd set up a shell script that arcserve could call post-backup.
