I have a client that has multiple VTY lines configured. One of these needs to be removed.

It is configured as line VTY 2 4 and I have tried issuing the "No line vty 2 4" command to which the router responded with "cannot delete the last 5 vty lines".

As anybody come across this before who can advise on how to proceed? MAny thanks

Cisco routers have a default of 5 vty lines which cannot be removed. Usually they have identical configurations and are used for telnet access to the router. This is why they appear as 'line vty 0 4' in the config (note that 0 4 actually is a range).

When you have a 'line vty 2 4' there also should be a 'line vty 0 1'. You should try to make the config in those two blocks the same by removing statements with 'no ...' or 'default ...' and/or adding statements. Once the configs are identical, you will see just one block 'line vty 0 5'.

If you need further assistance, please post all 'line' config blocks.

Trev,

Don't think you can, don't understand why you'd want to, not knowing the circumstances. If they don't want anyone to login to these you can do the following:

line vty 2 4
transport input none

This will prevent users from logging in on vty2,3, and 4.

Thanks to both of you. I reset the passwords on the second so it was the same as the one for vty 0 and all is now well. With only the vty 0 block showing in the config.

MAny thanks
