I have Windows Mail on a Vista Client.

There were a set of 'Imported Folders' that I deleted through Windows Mail and it seems to have deleted the physical file instead.

1. Is there a way through Windows to recover this?
2. If not, what is the file name/extension I should look for using a file recovery program?

Thanks

What folders have you got listed at this location?

C:\Users\Usernamexxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders

.eml might be the file extension of an E-mail message?

You might have to show both Hidden and System files via Control Panel/ Folder Options/ View, to navigate there.

One Subfolder has disappered in Windows Mail-Vista

Sorry for the delay - yesterday was a bank holiday:

1. What folders have you got listed at this location?

C:\Users\Usernamexxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders

->Deleted Items, Drafts, Imported folder (which has a couple of subfolders, but no contents), Inbox, Junk Email, Outbox, Search - 2006, Sent Items.

2. I've searched both on the hard drive and in file recovery software for *.eml - neither finds any apart from whats already there.

3. Hidden files are already shown.

4. The MS link didn't help :(

Thanks for the assistance

They are not in the Deleted Items folder or Recycle Bin, if they were, and if .eml was the correct extension I assume they would have turned up. With that last glimmer of hope vanishing perhaps all you are left with is recovery software.

The first link is freeware, the others are free to try before purchase. The last two are a slightly better product in my opinion.

There are some specific E-mail recovery programs that you could check out.

Recovery for Windows Mail v.3.2.0

If your E-mail was set up to leave copies of Mail on the Server that would be a benefit, but the default setting is not to do so.

You will find some E-mail backup programs here.

Thanks - I was able to restore the .eml files to C:\Users\......\mail

When I try and Import/Messages I get the error message:

No files found or they may be in use - I've tried moving the messages to a different area but same error pops up.

I can open each .eml file individually but need them imported into the mailbox

Can anyone assist?

I've tried all the available options.

If I drag and drop no matter what I do, all that happens is that a new email opens up with all the .eml files attached.

Has anyone seen this before?

I've imported all the missing .eml files but the body of the messages is just a load of odd characters like if an incorrect program has opened a file.

Can anyone assist?

Thanks

Earlier you said, "I was able to restore the .eml files to C:\Users\......\mail", what did you mean by restore? Was it by any method that might have corrupted the contents?

Which program originally created these files, was it Windows Mail, Outlook Express, or some other E-mail program?

Can these .eml files be read on some other machine (that has the originally used program installed) if you copy them to USB for testing?

Sorry for the delay in replying.

The restored .eml files will not work on another pc nor will they work on Thunderbird.

Have you successfully used the emailadept recover program? At this stage I'll pay for a commercial product!

Thanks

I have never used it myself, the site does offer a free evaluation first, so why not try that?

"Recovery for Windows Mail is fully capable of recovering deleted email in the Windows Mail client. Protect yourself and download your free evaluation version here: Windows Mail Recovery"

I've installed that a few times, but when I do a search, the screen turns grey and I get a progress bar at the bottom.

The program then closes.

Does that program work any better if you apply these (both) suggestions to it?

Have you tried right-clicking on the shortcut to the program, or the .exe, and selecting the "Run As Administrator" option? Do so even if your user is an Admin.

Try right-clicking on the actual Setup.exe and selecting the "Run As Administrator" option? Do so even if your user is an Admin.
