deleted users still show up in distribution list 1

I have several long since deleted internal users (Exchange 2003) who I still get the folowing bounce message for when I send to the distribution list:
The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the recipient directly to find out the correct address

How can I clear up my distribution list?
 
Do they appear when you expand the DL?

If so then perhaps you are running in cache mode with an out of date OAB.


Another possibility is that there is some forwarding going on on one of the mailboxes that is in the DL.
i.e. They have a rule for 'If sent to DL then forward to X:'

it turned otu to be a delegate issue. Thanks for the help
